Heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury pulled out of his rematch with former champion Wladimir Klitschko on Friday because Fury is medically unfit to fight, his promoter said. The fight had been scheduled for Oct. 29 in Furys hometown of Manchester, England.Multiple sources with knowledge of the correspondence between Furys camp and Klitschkos camp on Friday said it included a letter from Furys doctor. The letter said Fury had mental health issues and would be unavailable for the foreseeable future.Mick Hennessy, Furys promoter, released a statement Friday afternoon, but he did not divulge Furys medical issue. It is with the deepest regret that we have to announce that the world heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko will not be going ahead, Hennessy said. Tyson has, this week, been declared medically unfit to fight. Medical specialists have advised that the condition is too severe to allow him to participate in the rematch and that he will require treatment before going back into the ring.Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery. We and Tyson wish to express our sincerest apologies to all those concerned with the event and all the boxing fans who had been looking forward to the rematch. Tyson is understandably devastated by the development. We will be making a further statement in due course. Until then, we ask that Tyson and his family be given the privacy and the space he needs to recover during this difficult time.Klitschko had been training in his native Ukraine and was planning to head to the mountains in Austria for the rest of his camp Tuesday before word came Friday morning that Fury had pulled out of the fight. After being informed of Furys withdrawal, Klitschkos attorney, John Hornewer, wrote a letter to various sanctioning bodies. In the letter, obtained by ESPN.com, he wrote, Earlier today, the Klitschko camp was informed by the Fury side that Tyson Fury will not be fit to participate. ... On behalf of Mr. Klitschko and K2 Promotions, LLC, this office respectfully requests that the organizations make the appropriate inquiries of Mr. Fury as per your rules and regulations and that you keep the Klitschko camp informed of your progress and decisions related to this matter. Please permit this to confirm that Mr. Klitschko remains ready, willing and able to box and will await word on next steps. It is the second time the rematch was erased from a planned date. The fight was originally scheduled for July 9, also at Manchester Arena, but Fury pulled out in late June after he said he sprained his ankle during a training run and his doctor told him he needed to lay off it for about six weeks. When the fight was rescheduled earlier this month, the camps scheduled a news conference for Sept. 5 in London, but it was called off the day before. It was rescheduled for Sept. 12, also in London, and while the promoters and Klitschko, 40, showed up, Fury, 28, skipped it. He said his car broke down.Wladimir is totally disappointed that the guy postponed again, Bernd Boente, Klitschkos manager, told ESPN.com. Wladimir is being held hostage by this guy. He wants to fight, he trains, and now the first fight is almost a year ago. Its up to the governing bodies to make a decision regarding the titles, but that is not in our hands. We hope Wladimir can fight again soon.Last Nov. 28, at ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany, where Klitschko (64-4, 54 KOs) is a major star, Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) pulled off one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight history. He ended Klitschkos 9?-year title reign by unanimous decision (116-111, 115-112, 115-112) to claim his various sanctioning-organization title belts and the lineal world championship.Fury was later stripped of one of the belts for failing to fight a mandatory opponent because Klitschko exercised his right to an immediate rematch, as spelled out in their contract in the event he lost. The latest withdrawal could lead other organizations to strip Fury for inactivity.Fury tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone in an earlier fight, even though, for reasons that are unclear, the results did not come to light until June, well after he had beaten Klitschko.Fury, who denied taking a banned substance, faces a Nov. 4 hearing, and if found guilty, he could be banned. Testing for the rematch was being overseen by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. According to sources with knowledge of the testing, Fury already has been tested twice, but no results have been disclosed yet. CINCINNATI -- Trae Waynes gets a chance to show how far hes come in the year since the Minnesota Vikings made him their top pick.Veteran cornerback Terence Newman didnt make the trip to Ohio this week as the Vikings held two days of joint practices with one of his former clubs, the Cincinnati Bengals. Hell miss the preseason opener on Friday night because of an undisclosed injury, giving Waynes an opportunity.Waynes succumbed to hot and humid conditions on Wednesday, the first day of joint practices, but returned on Thursday and is expected to start the preseason game. He started only one game last season but led the Vikings in special teams tackles in an understudy role to Newman and Xavier Rhodes. We wish (Newman) could be here, but Im just going to try to take advantage of this opportunity, he said. Ill keep learning and progressing.Waynes is one of four former first-round picks playing for the Vikings, along with Newman (Dallas 2003), Rhodes (2013) and safety Harrison Smith (2012). Although he got sick on Wednesday, he returned a day later and covered A.J. Green. It was frustrating that I had to miss practice, but it was the smart thing to do at the time, Waynes said. Its a chance to get better going up a great receiver like (Green). It is only going to make you better because the competition level is so high with that.Waynes made his first career interception last January in the Vikings 10-9 NFC Wild Card playoff game loss to Seattle. The interception and 24-yard return in the third quarter set up a 43-yard field goal by Blair Walsh, a kick that gave Minnesota a 6-0 lead. That game was played in minus-25 wind chill conditions at TCF Bank Stadium. The conditions in Cincinnati the last two days for the joint practices have been the complete opposite. Temperatures have been in the upper 80s with humidity levels that have pushed the heat index toward triple digits. It was nice and hot out here, both days, sso that was good, coach Mike Zimmer.dddddddddddd I thought it was a very productive two days.Zimmer wasnt willing to divulge much about how much his starters would play, but quarterback Teddy Bridgewater isnt expected to see much time on the field after getting the bulk of the snaps against the Bengals in the practices. As is the case for most preseason games, Friday night will be more about backups than the starters. This game doesnt wait on anybody, said quarterback Shaun Hill, a 15-year veteran who is No. 2 on the depth chart behind Bridgewater. There are a lot of people on every NFL roster that have a lot to prove every single week in order to make a team. Thats the approach that you have to take. I know a lot of people just talk about the starters and how theyre in and out, but for the majority of the roster its a battle for four weeks to get on a team.Game notes Besides Newman, nine other players did not make the trip to Cincinnati. Wide receiver Jarius Wright (injury), cornerback Melvin White, cornerback Marcus Sherels, running back Jhurrell Pressley, linebacker Edmond Robinson (injury), linebacker Eric Kendricks (injury), linebacker Brandon Watts (injury), defensive tackle Sharif Floyd (injury) and defensive tackle Scott Crichton (injury) didnt travel for the practices. White, Sherels and Pressley were dealing with personal issues, Zimmer said, but it is possible they could be back with the team in time for Fridays game. ... Right tackle Andre Smith, who left Cincinnati as a free agent and signed with the Vikings, spent several minutes after practice catching up with Bengals coach Marvin Lewis. He didnt offer a chance thereafter as he reached his third hundred of the season.Brown gave him excellent support as he rediscovered the form which brought him 1,031 Championship runs in Division One last season, but their task was made easier by a surface on which batting was relatively straightforward.Glamorgan plugged away but their fast-bowling spearhead Michael Hogan was restricted to 10 overs as he continued to recover from mild concussion when he was hit on the helmet on the second day.Graham Wagg diid remove Luke Wright for 19 when the Sussex captain lost his off stump playing no shot but Sussex accumulated remorselessly after that as Wells and Brown set a new record for any wicket against Glamorgan, beating the 281 by John Langridge and Harry Parks at Eastbourne in 1938.ddddddddddddWells guided van der Gugten through the vacant slip area for his 10th four to reach his century and Brown got to his off the last ball before tea when he cut slow left-armer Morgan to the point boundary. As Wells inevitably tired towards the end of an innings which ended four minutes short of seven hours, Brown upped the tempo after tea as Sussex sped towards their declaration.A dab to the third-man fence took him to 150 for only the second time in his career. Wells then struck a straight six - only the 16th of his career - before offering a sharp return catch to Morgan off the next ball. Wells 181 came off 343 balls and he also hit 18 fours.Browns 159 not out was only four short of his career best and came off 225 balls with 15 fours and a maximum. With skipper Jacques Rudolph nursing a badly bruised hand, Glamorgans 46-year-old coach Robert Croft was among five substitute fielders employed.
